Binding new mesh to existing rig

Hello, im trying to bind a new mesh to an existing rig, but it doesnt work, i select the mesh, then the joints, bind skin, and i can see the skincluster is created, but the rig doesnt influence the new mesh, also i cant paint skinweight to the new mesh. Can you check if it could be a problem of the rig somehow? i cant find anything on internet.
