Q/A

RRv2 backward compatibility with RRv1 (PAIE animation data)

Date:04/01/2013

Hi Dustin,

First of all, thanks for your great plugin!  I've been using RRv1 for over a year, and it has been fantastic :)

I've recently downloaded RRv2 to move my character animation pipeline to the new version.  However, I'm not getting the expected results when using PAIE to move animation data from the controllers of the old rig to the new rig.  Has something changed from v1 to v2 so that the controller animations would be different from one version to the other?  If so, would it be possible to correct this so that PAIE data stored from v1 would work with v2?

Thanks!
Bill

Hi Dustin, Some more info: I just did a quick test moving a walk cycle over from v1 to v2 rig using PAIE (FK arms and IK feet), and it seems that everything is working okay except for the right IK foot and its knee aim constraint. Haven't tested IK arms or FK legs yet. Is the right foot IK in v2 somehow different from the right foot IK in v1? Thanks! I'll do some more tests and post results... let me know if this is an easy fix, so I can start using v2 with my new project :) Best, Bill

Hi Bill, There would be some issues between version 1 and 2. The biggest one is what you mention about the IK controls. In version 1, I had the IK controls mirroring rotation, to be the same as the FK controls. However, the biggest request that I had for Rapid Rig was to not have the mirroring, because it caused issues with translations. For example, in world space, +Y on one leg would be -Y on the other. So if you tried to grab both legs and move them together while in world space, they would move in opposite directions in two of the axes. Hope that makes sense. If you want to see what has been updated and changed since the version you have, you can go to the History tab and you will find a detailed breakdown of every bug fix, change and added feature for each update. Let me know if you have more questions, Dustin

Awesome... thanks, Dustin! Wrote a quick python script to fix the IK translations and rotations after importing v1 animations onto the v2 rig, and now I'm good to go :)
