motion capture help

I have been working with motion capture also recently
and have come across the inport problem. I solved it by importing the
BVH. file into motion builder then exporting it as a FBX,
The question i have is after importing the motion capture skeleton
i want to be able at points to animate the character myself without
using the motion capture. So this would make it easier if minor errors
occcur. Do you have any idea how i would go about this?.
Would i need to rig a characters mesh and then have the motion caputure
skeleton attached to the rig?.
